Creating art from earth has power in and of itself. Taking a ball of clay and transforming it into something that could be both beautiful and evocative is magical to Nick. The clay has the tactile working qualities like no other and it offers limitless possibilities aesthetically and technically. The challenge is to connect within and convey that to someone else.
For Nick, the beginning of construction of a piece through the final process offers many opportunities along the way for interpertation. There is a negligible amount of control in the firing processes of ‘naked’ raku or sagger firing that he uses and a great deal of ‘giving over’ to whatever happens in these techniques. The teacher in the process is non-attachment to ones own expectations of the final outcome. What comes from this process at the very end is often the most inspirational.
